After falling in love with the new song Gifted by NASA featuring Kanye, Lykke Li, and Santogold I wanted to see what else I knew from the artist I'm least familiar with. Turns out that I knew this song by Santogold but always thought it was something from another fave of mine Tegan & Sara.

I like her outfit, and her hair.

I think it would go well with one of these geometric necklaces. A DIY project.

DIY Accessory - Geometric Jewelry
Modern jewelry trends are taking a style note from ancient civilizations. Bib necklaces, cuffs and modern earrings are starting to resemble hieroglyphics or something out of Cleopatra's jewelry box.

As we've learned from designs by House of Harlow, Eddie Borgo, and Missoni, wearing a statement piece of jewelry isn't all that complicated. That's why we're showing you how to do it yourself.

Take some inspiration from your ancestors or the runway to create a one of a kind necklace.

You'll discover beauty in the simplicity of this inspired-by-the-ancients DIY project.

What you'll need-

-Long tubular beads about 1.5 " long
-Jump rings
-Eye pins
-12 inches of chain
-Clasp
-Pliers

Step 1 - Lay out your beads in the geometric pattern you desire, the possibilities are endless.

Step 2 - String one eye pin through each bead making a loop hole at the end with your pliers.

Step 3 - Using your pliers attach the beads to one another to create a triangle pattern.

Step 4 - Attach your chain to the geometric design with your pliers, jump rings and clasp.

Get to Know Aslaug

ASLAUG MAGNUSDOTTIR

CEO AND CO-FOUNDER, MODA OPERANDI. NEW YORK

Not only is she Brills, but omg, her collection of amazing garments and other pieces is just out of this world. you have to see for yourself.

http://thecoveteur.com/Aslaug_MagnusdottirShe´s obviously a fan of Matthew Williamson. Can´t argue with that. Here´s a few wild dresses he designed for h&M in 2009.

and some newer things from the 2012 collection

aND SOMETHING FROM HIS PRE-FALL COLLECTION:

More Mellow Yellow

It just arrived, my yellow summer tote I scored off French Ebay.
It brightened my day and I am already dreaming of a day at the beach. Hopefully sooner than later.

Since, I'm on the topic of yellow AGAIN I'm just going to segue into my next blog about Creatures of the Wind with this little beauty:
The dimensions are puzzling but mesmerizing as well. I can't stop thinking to myself "just cinch it" like the SNL Gap Girls. Here's a video from memory lane, no mention of cinching but still funny as hell.

what's hot today

As of late my opinion as really changed of Mrs. Beckham. I'm so glad Posh is designing because the woman has great style. Despite her uberchic and formfitting personal style she has spun out some pretty creative and wearable dresses with her new collection. It's no wonder she was won Designer Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards

pair it with:

Claire Vivier bag available at Anthropologie for  €139.00
(also available in Blue)

I would pair it with this bag for a touch of texture to make the colors of the dress really pop:

San Cisco - Awkward

A little poppy, but catchy tune.

Sunday

The weather has been unbearable this past week ranging from -4 to -13 degrees. What better way to demonstrate the frigidness than to check out the beautiful statue at Place Taureaux here in Lyon. In its frozen state it's quite gorgeous and people flock from all over town to take photos of the congealed horses. I took similar pictures one year ago. This same image was featured on the cover of the local paper Le Progress today.

For more images from our frozen town.

Talk Shop Tuesday

Today I went out to the streets to do some shopping with my new friend Jenna from Toronto. We started off our afternoon picking up some fun stuff at a resale shop properly named New Rose, although you´ll find nothing but vintage goodies here.
We wound our way through the drizzling rain over to Vanessa Bruno which is tucked away on a quiet street, it´s so hidden it didn´t even appear on our maps app.

I´d passed by this street a million times and had no idea that we had a Vanessa Bruno in Lyon, but my fashion forward Lyon newbie knew it from the start. Let´s go exploring....

First of all the walls of the shop are littered with photos of Kate Bosworth, which I think I referenced this video in a earlier post.

Really my eyes were drawn to the knee length boots that come in a variety of colors. I adore the dusty pink ones on the sale shelf but didn´t dare peak at the price. Too tempting. Her collection included very soft colors and ethereal fabrics. Simple at first glance but the beauty really comes from the details. You will probably recognize many different knockoffs of this bag of hers.

Travel Guide?

¨Omg lady thanks for everything. I can't begin to tell you how much you helped
Paul and I through Barcelona and Paris. Loved everything. Just wanted to share. I will be posting pics soon. Xoxo, Janellica¨

I´ve been getting a lot of requests from friends to help them plan their trips while in Barcelona and France. Maybe I should start charging for this.

Stylist Friday

Catherine Baba
http://catherinebaba.com/

From WikiFashion:

Catherine Baba is a stylist[2] who moved to Paris from Australia in 1996. [3] Even though her personal myspace page lists her age as 75 years old, many people believe this is in homage to the year she wishes she were born in. [4] She has been described as the most fashionable women in Paris, famed for her mix of 20s, 30s[5] and hollywood glamor pieces. [6][7] In the April 2010 issue of Vogue magazines she said that she only wears vintage fur.[8]

She is notorious for arriving at all of the Paris shows on her bicycle[9], which she rides while wearing high heels. The stylist has worked for brands such as Givenchy, Ungaro, Balmain[10] and Chanel, as well as magazines like Dazed & Confused, Vanity Fair[11] and Vogue. [12]

Anna Sui 2009 & Alexander Girard

Alexander H. Girard
(1907-1993)

from: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/about/girard-bio.html

Alexander " Sandro" Girard grew up in Florence, Italy, the son of an American mother and an Italian father. As a child he was fascinated by nativities, toys, and miniatures.

Alexander Girard first began collecting folk art in the 1930's, buying a few pieces in New York, starting with a spatter-painted Mexican bank in the shape of a horse. Later, on a postponed honeymoon, Alexander and Susan Girard traveled to Mexico and returned with a carload of things for their home, the beginnings of what was to become the largest collection of cross-cultural folk art in the world.

Alexander GirardIt was in 1978 that the Girards made a gift of the Girard Foundation Collection to the State of New Mexico. Their generous gift of some 106,000 objects quintupled the size of the Museum of International Folk Art's collection and led to the construction of a new wing for the museum.

Alexander Girard himself designed the exhibition Multiple Visions: A Common Bond which displays more than 10,000 pieces from the Girard Foundation Collection. An interior designer and architect, he was already well-known for his bold and colorful designs of textiles, household and office furnishings, graphics, and interiors for corporate clients such as Herman Miller, Inc., John Deere and Braniff International. In this installation, he challenged the conventions of exhibition design. Notice how his design occupies the entire volume of the gallery space, how he places objects both above and below eye level, and how he used color throughout the exhibit, even overhead.

More than a million visitors have enjoyed the creativity and generosity of Alexander and Susan Girard since the exhibition opened in 1982. Like museum founder Florence Dibell Bartlett, Alexander Girard hoped visitors would see connections, the common bond, among the peoples of the world. For indeed, as an old Italian proverb oft-repeated by Sandro Girard tells us, Tutto il mondo è paese- The whole world is hometown.

table-basse.jpg girard_sofa.jpg

Things Ariel Taught Me

Things Ariel Taught Me

THINGS ARIEL TAUGHT ME

Ariel. In 1989, she was who every young girl wanted to be. This Little Mermaid proved that if you work hard and play your cards right, you can have your cake and eat it too… on a boat, with your Prince and fireworks. Complete with a little emotional growth learned along her road to happiness, she is living-cartoon proof that you can achieve everything you want out of life, circumstances be damned.

Let’s face it: even now, I want to be her – drop-dead gorgeous, amazing hair, can sing like you wouldn’t believe, owner of the perkiest boobs EVER, former undersea Princess, rule breaker, trouble maker, problem solver, Prince-marrier and just naive enough to be cute. Even though for most of the movie she didn’t speak, if you really listen, this redhead speaks volumes.

All these years later, I’ve realized Ariel schooled me on some very important tips on growing up:

- Never show up late to a party your parents are throwing. Hell will break loose and you’ll be blamed.

- You don’t have to be satisfied with the status quo: it’s okay to push the envelope, just remember to watch out for sharks.

- One cavern can hold a lot of wonders and being a little bit of a hoarder is okay as long as nobody knows about it. You’re totally screwed if your Dad finds out, though.

- Everyone needs a Dinglehopper. Snarfblats will get you in trouble. So will boys.

- Jamaicans are the voice of reason. Listen to them.

- Love at first sight is never reliable, especially when one of you may have a concussion.

- Always read the fine print on any contract you sign. Pay extra attention to troublesome clauses that contain specific dates, mentions of “sundown” and/or “kisses of true love”.

- If you like a guy, it’s okay to make the first move. If you don’t, there’s a chance he’ll marry someone else.

- Persistence is key. Ambition will get you everywhere.

- Your friends really do have your back.

…and perhaps the most important think Ariel taught me? Every woman needs her own voice.

Ariel is hitting theaters in 3D September 2013 and I will be first in line. Until then, if anybody needs me, you’ll find me in my apartment surrounded by my gadgets and gizmos a plenty, my whoozits and whatsits galore, my thingamabobs (I’ve got 20)… but who cares? No big deal. I want more.

21 daily reminders

ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully..

FIVE. When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye..
SIX ... Be engaged at least six months before you get married.
SEVEN.. Believe in love at first sight.

FOURTEEN.  Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk..
FIFTEEN.  Say 'bless you' when you hear someone sneeze.

SIXTEEN.
When you lose, don't lose the lesson !
SEVENTEEN.  Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and responsibility for all your actions.

Sui Inspired

So I've finally got the Anna Sui book. It only took about 10 days to get here but alas it arrived yesterday morning. Several of my current projects have been stuck and after reading the first couple pages of Anna's story I got my motivation back. I will post pics later as some of them will be gifts for the family. I really love Anna's ability to mix colors and textures. I tend to be too matchy sometimes and putting black on top of grey can really bring a garment down. With Anna's style she always adds a little flair to a normally dull garment that's what really makes her fashion work. Her work is not over the top but always edgy enough to set it apart and give it that extra umph. She really pushes the girliness in her garments and I think that is lost in most of today's clothes. The ruffles, the trims, embroideries, buttons, and bows fulfill every fashionista's dream.

More on that later, time to finish packing for Barcelona!!!!

Me vs. Pippa: updated*

I just discovered BDBA this weekend in Barcelona. Love their bright colors and florals, everything is so girly. They have the same dress but for a little more than what I paid for it at Zara.
Vita goes for 198 Euros. That's about 5 times what I paid.

Spiced Coconut Lentil Soup

I made slight adjustments, instead of coconut oil I used sesame oil. Instead of an actual chili I put chili powder. No himalayan salt. Regular milk for half the amount of coconut milk. So yummy!

Bubble Blues

Thanksgiving has passed, though the holidays are still continuing strong. After four months of marriage I haven´t given much thought at all to working out. I almost joined a gym but wanted to wait until we stopped travelling so much so I wouldn´t waste money on something that I can´t use. However, after putting on my old jean jacket (it´s always a good detector because it never stretches or shrinks too much),  I´m pulling to make the buttons fit. This means that I probably would be getting angry with myself if I stepped on a scale right now. Starting today, it´s firm-up time! Well, considering that I´ve already got bacon in the oven for some bacon wrapped prawns the diet will have to start after lunch (no carbs though!). First step, we´ll shake the dust off the old dumbells.

Here´s a good bootyshakin´song

Movie # 3

I took my friend Gijung to the movies last night for her birthday. We saw the lady. Amazeballs.
